EPOTY23 announces ethics panel

The 2022 edition of the Environmental Photographer of the Year competition was the first one to feature an ethics panel. We believe this was a valuable and essential addition to our competition proceedings, so we are excited to continue the practice.

Today, we are extremely pleased to announce our three ethics panel members for 2023:

• Savannah Dodd (PhD)

  • Anthropologist and photographer
  • Founded the Photography Ethics Centre to raise awareness around the ethics of taking and sharing visual media
  • Designs and delivers workshops, lectures, and other educational content for international audiences from a variety of sectors 
  • Doctorate in anthropology from Queen’s University Belfast (2023)
  • Master’s in anthropology and sociology from the Graduate Institute of International Development Studies in Geneva (2015)
  • Bachelor’s in anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis (2012)
  • Member of the Ethical Journalism Network’s UK Committee 
  • Member of the board of Source Magazine

• Tahnee Burgess

  • Core interest: how to communicate climate news effectively
  • Currently Media and Communications Officer with Australia’s National Environment Science Program’s Climate Systems Hub
  • Works to connect decision makers and Traditional Owners with Australia’s best available climate science
  • Member of Monash University’s Climate Change Communication Research Hub
  • Authored reports on the media reporting of climate across Australia and the Pacific
  • Spoke on the importance of effective climate communication at COP27
  • Member of the Ocean Visuals project advisory board
  • Previously a researcher on best practice climate change communication in the Pacific, on behalf of the Australian Pacific Climate Partnership, and with the CRC for Water Sensitive Cities
  • Specialises in social resilience to extreme weather events
  • Masters of Environment and Sustainability, specialising in Environmental Security, with a double degree in Arts and Science

• Tendai Marima

  • Born and raised in Zimbabwe, and professionally active across East and Southern Africa
  • Journalist who works in the written and visual mediums
  • Holds degrees from the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and Goldsmiths College, UCL (UK)
  • Active member of: Native Agency, Fairpicture, African Women Photograph, Women Photograph, the Everyday Projects
  • Founding member of Everyday Zimbabwe
  • Fellow with the Nature Environment and Wildlife Filmmakers (NEWF)
