People’s Choice

We would like to thank everyone for their interest in this year’s EPOTY People’s Choice Award. In recent weeks we have received questions around the topic of consent and the circumstances behind some of the images published in the Environmental Photographer of the Year. We have published a statement in response to those questions. This includes a commitment to review our processes and our stance in relation to some of the subject matter brought forward through the competition. We have decided not to make any further announcements relating to the peoples’ choice out of respect for the very important questions raised and to provide time to undertake our review.

People’s Choice: Bohai - China's Threatened Coastline, Sean Gallagher, 2019.

Emissions from industries that power and build our modern societies have gone up by 1.5% per year in the last decade, putting Earth on course to experience a temperature rise of 3.2C by the end of this century. Meanwhile, this facility in Bohai Bay is near sea level and is in direct threat from predicted sea-level rise and extreme storm surges due to climate change.
